| Adam Smith is the astrologer for the Sun Herald in Sydney and Sunday Age in Melbourne, Australia. For anyone who doesn’t know, we’re coming up to a rather special year. 2012 has been the subject of all kinds of speculation for decades, gathering intensity ever since the millennium. Extravagant theories of a spiritual gateway leading to a rebirth of consciousness, all the way up to a redrawing of the earth’s geography.
According to the reckoning of the Mayans (ancient Aztec/ Mesoamerican civilization), who were adept astrologers, 2012 is the date our present cycle of time finishes. The so-called Mayan Long Count, a period of 5125 years, began at a mythological point which most authorities agree was August 11, 3114 BC. The exact moment the new era arrives is December 21st, 2012 A.D, at precisely 11:11 am GMT! (See chart, below). This comes at the close conjunction of the Winter Solstice Sun with the crossing point of the Galactic Equator (equator of the Milky Way) and the Ecliptic (path of the Sun). Since you ask… In fact, the so-called New Age has been growing steadily for decades, if not centuries. Ever since the discovery of Uranus in 1781, arguably, the first planet outside of the classical astrological seven. The Scientific Enlightenment, ironically, has also seen the rebirth of a spirituality that is personally empowering and based on experiential knowledge, rather than hand-me-down superstition. And there is a further correspondence between the 2012 prophecy and the Vedic civilization’s concept of Kali Yuga. Yugas are vast ages of time, of which Kali Yuga is our present era of materialism and spiritual decadence. This is said to have begun in the year 3102BCE, making a difference of only 12 years between two wholly independent world traditions. Kali Yuga is hundreds of thousands of years long in entirety, but the Vedic scripture Brahma Vaivata Purana Sutra depicts a mini-Golden age – Sat Yuga– lasting 10,000 years, within the larger extent of Kali Yuga. So, we are heading for an oasis of spirituality in the wider context of a materialistic eon. The testimonies are stacking up in favour of a Major Change. Will there be a new beginning? It’s already started. Think about it: The last few years have seen Saddam, Osama, Gaddafi, Mubarak, Kim Jong il, all gone: no more Bush/ McCain, Blair or Berlusconi. Libran Vladimir Putin isn’t exactly flavour of the month in Russia. Greedy, destructive world leaders can’t get a toehold now that the grip of Kali Yuga has been broken. Still, there may be further upheavals to come and the analogy is like water turning from liquid to steam: it’s the same O2 essence, but there’s a period of bubbling at the transition point from gross to subtle. Ironically, the astrology of 2012 specifically, is not as intense as 2010-11, which saw the Cardinal Grand Cross involving Mars-Saturn-Uranus-Pluto. This isn’t to say conditions will be easy, however! Chief among the agents of change will be the exact Uranus-Pluto square from June-September. The issues are about old versus new, liberal v conservative. Pluto in Capricorn alone tears down hidebound institutions and brings them back transformed. Pluto issues, whether executive power or material energy, are front and centre of the news but the change won’t come without a struggle. World hierarchies and plutocracies will resist the upstart Uranus in Aries impulse and try to cling on to control. It will be emotional. We had a flavour of this dynamic last year, with the Arab Spring, the riots and demonstrations in Britain and the Occupy movement in the USA. Now the aspect perfects in 2012, we will see a breakthrough, but the system might have to break down first. Planets changing sign this year: Jupiter goes into Gemini on 11th June, great news for the Air signs. Expansion through ideas, and grabbing intellectual property… while the concept still exists. Saturn enters Scorpio on 5th October. Between this and Neptune in Pisces, we might see a refinement of social media. Saturn in Libra from 2009-12 saw reconciliation and healing in relationships – smileys, LOLs all-round, everybody friends. Scorpio is more refined: we will pull the shutters down and only be friends with people we actually like! Neptune re-enters Pisces on 3rd February , for the next decade and beyond. This is a widespread change, which will be felt in the psychic and artistic spheres, charities and in the world’s oceans. A retrospective on Neptune in Aquarius (since 1998) would be dominated by the rise of the internet and social networking. Many of our recent political changes (Arab Spring, arguably Obama’s election 2008) could not have happened otherwise. The Meeja as a whole has been transformed, for better and worse, and now with Neptune in Pisces we will see a more artistic internet, with graphics and imagery scaling new heights. Hopefully there will be a more human face, and we will be linked through spirit, as well as technology. Conmen will have a field day, but charities and good causes will also benefit. The oceans will rise over the next decade and the miraculous properties of water will be better understood. Psychic techniques will develop and the power of mass prayer/ meditation will come into its own. Neptune rising in the all-important 2012 Winter Solstice chart may be significant in this respect. Sound therapy in the form of mantras and chanting is highly significant astrologically and can overcome all obstacles. Mars is retrograde in Virgo from January 24th to April 14th. Between this and Saturn also retro in Libra, events in the first months of the year will seem very s l o w. Consolidation is key. Venus retrograde in Gemini: 15th May – 27th June. You will see another side of somebody close to you and have to re-evaluate your relationship.
